Don’t Forget About Me
There are four aspects (or bodies) to our state of being. They are spiritual, mental, emotional and physical. If you want to squeeze as much as you can out of the toothpaste tube of life, then consider all four bodies of your existence. When proceeding with a manifestation, the three bodies of focus are usually spiritual, mental and emotional.
The physical body houses the other three bodies. It is the physical structure whose existence allows you to use your mind and emotions to the best benefit. If your body was able to verbally talk to you (now that’s a scary thought), it might say, “hey those other guys are all important but don’t forget about me”.
If you neglect to do what you are able to do to keep your body working properly, it could lead to minor or major infirmities. When your body is in a state of dis-ease, it has the potential to negatively affect the other three bodies of your existence.
A Beet Juice A Day
You know the spiel. Eat right. Don’t smoke. Drink alcohol in moderation. Cut back on sugar. Exercise every day. Reduce your salt intake. Brush your teeth. Clean between your toes. Get plenty of sleep. And on and on. In other words, your doctor may say to you, “do everything perfect and you’ll be in good health”. Yeah, right Doc, I’m on it. It’s like the preacher saying to you, “follow all the rules and regulations of my religion and you’ll be living large”.
There is however, a really simple thing that you can do every day for your health. It takes a very short amount of time. This thing will bring you a whole basket full of benefits. You have probably heard the old saying, “An apple a day, keeps the doctor away”. I am going to amend that slightly to say, “A glass of beet juice a day, keeps the doctor away”. The scientifically proven benefits of drinking a glass of beet juice every day have been well documented by the medical community.
It Ain’t Snake Oil Folks
Something as easy as drinking a glass full of beet juice on a daily basis can (and pay attention now): help reduce blood pressure, keep your arteries flexible, lower bad cholesterol, increase good cholesterol, reduce arthritic inflammation, protect your bones from osteoporosis, reduce the risk of developing dementia, relieve constipation, and improve your stamina during physical exercise. If that sounds like a pitch from an old time snake oil salesman, think again. All of these benefits have been documented as real. Whatever website you choose, be it webmd, healthline, mayo clinic, cleveland clinic, etc., you will see the benefits delineated.
If you don’t like the taste of beet juice (and many do not), try experimenting with blending in a minority portion (80/20) of some other juice or flavoring. For example, apple juice, carrot juice, pineapple juice, lemon juice and fresh ginger all can alter the taste of beet juice more to your liking.
The Bennies
Yes, there are most definitely a bunch of benefits that you receive when you enter the world of beet juice. If the pharmaceutical companies could find a way to create a monopoly on beet juice, they would charge a fortune. There would be no end to their extoling the benefits of beet juice.
Lower Blood Pressure
This one is a biggie. High blood pressure is a huge problem in the United States today. Researchers have revealed that drinking at least eight ounces of beet juice a day will lower blood pressure. It reduces both the systolic (the top number) as well as the diastolic (the bottom number). Beet juice has compounds called nitrates, that convert into nitric oxide in the blood. This nitric oxide helps widen and relax the body’s blood vessels. Presto, your heart says “Thank you”.
Down With The Bad, Up With The Good
In a study published in 2011, it was discovered that beet extract lowered bad cholesterol and triglycerides. Bad cholesterol is the stuff that gunks up your arteries. Moreover, that same study also showed that beet extract increased what is known as good cholesterol. These good guys are called high-density lipoproteins or HDL. HDL is called the good cholesterol because it helps to clean out the bad stuff from your bloodstream.
Increase Your Stamina
Many athletes follow a regimen of drinking beet juice before a competition. The beet juice causes an increase in plasma nitrate levels. This improves physical stamina. During a 2012 study, two groups of pro cyclists were closely monitored. The group that drank two cups of beet juice improved their 10K time trial by about twelve seconds. In the world of cycling, the difference between winning and second place could be mere seconds. Thus, that twelve second improvement is a big deal. In addition, the beet juice cyclists were also successful in reducing their maximum oxygen output.
Reduce Risk Of Developing Dementia
In yet another medical study published in the journal Nitric Oxide, it was established that nitrates may help to increase blood flow in the brain in older people and slow cognitive decline. One group of participants consumed a high nitrate diet that included beet juice. Brain MRI’s were taken. These MRI’s disclosed increased blood flow the the frontal lobe of the brain. Frontal lobes are associated with cognitive thinking.
But Wait, There’s More
There is a lot more that beet juice can do for you. It can limit swelling and arthritic inflammation, protect bones from osteoporosis, help protect skin from sun damage, help to promote a healthy immune system and last, but definitely not least, help relieve constipation.
1-800-It’s The Beets
One harmless effect of drinking beet juice each day is something called beeturia, Beeturia is when your urine turns red after you drink beet juice. Over the years, as the advantages of beets have gotten publicized, more and more people have gotten on board the “beet train”. There have been those among that crowd however, that almost shit themselves when they see their red urine and think it’s blood. (Oh yeah, I almost forgot, your stools turn pink also).
A standup comedian once did a small bit on beeturia in his act. Going through his schtick on a guy seeing his pee come out red, he said that he wanted to start a toll free phone line called “1-800-It’s The Beets”.
A Few Precautions
Obviously, if beet juice helps to lower blood pressure, you do not want to be drinking it if you are prone to low blood pressure. Likewise, if you are at high risk of developing kidney stones, stay away from beet juice. Beets contain high levels of oxalates which can cause kidney stones in people that are at high risk for this particular condition. As in any new health regimen, before starting, talk things over with your family doctor first.
Fresh Versus Bottled Versus Cooked
The very best way to drink beet juice is to juice it yourself with a good electric juicer. In that way, you ingest all of the goodies (nitrates, antioxidants, vitamins, etc.) without any degradation. If you don’t want to juice it yourself, stop at the local juice bar (if you have one) and get your fresh beet juice in this manner.
If you have no way to drink fresh pressed beet juice, bottled juice is your next alternative. Bottled juice is good but it has been heat pasteurized to prevent bacteria from forming during the bottling process. Flash pasteurization is a more expensive process. It kills the bacteria but preserves more of the nutrients than standard pasteurization. Think of it as good (standard pasteurized bottled juice), better (flash pasteurized) and best (fresh squeezed).
If you enjoy eating roasted or lightly steamed beets, by all means, go ahead and enjoy. The heat and cooking will dissipate some of the nutrients but that is the case with most vegetables. Most of the nutrients will remain. Stay away however from boiling beets. The boiling method will lose the most nutrients of all methods of cooking beets.
My Personal Experience
I have experience with drinking beet juice. The one benefit that I can quantify without any doubt is the lowering of blood pressure. It works. I went through a period of time where my blood pressure was very high. When I discovered this, I did some research online. I learned about the benefits of beet juice. Consequently, I immediately started a daily regimen of drinking beet juice. I took my own blood pressure with an at-home device. Beet juice did lower my blood pressure. I experimented further. I found even better response with fresh squeezed beet juice.
Since I was on a roll, I decided to put away my dislike of going to the doctor. After discussion with my physician, he wrote a prescription for an anti-hypertensive. Between the prescription and the beet juice, my blood pressure has gone down from the stroke high danger zone to perfectly normal. It is my belief that at some point, I will be able to discontinue the prescription.
